What is Weightlifting?
Weightlifting (sometimes called Olympic Weightlifting) is a sport where athletes compete in lifting a barbell in 2 defined movements, the snatch and the clean and jerk.
When training for weightlifting these two movements are practiced and supported with accessory work such a squats, pulls and pushes to build strength.
Athletes compete in weight categories and the winner is the one that successfully lifts the most whilst adhering to the technical success criteria.
At EDGE we aim to support those that want to compete but there is absolutely no pressure to do so. Many will want to come simply because it is fun, to support other sports or because they want the benefits weightlifting provides such as developing strength and injury prehab.
Why do Weightlifting?
Weightlifting builds strength and coordination, strengthens bones and helps protect muscles and joints from injury, as well as helping to improve confidence and self-esteem.
Other benefits include improved balance, agility, mobility and aerobic endurance, increased power output, faster running and better sports performance.
There are also mental health benefits that come with exercising regularly, learning new skills and building resilience.
Weightlifting at EDGE is about being stronger at life, welcome to the team.
